🎎 Antique Japanese Wooden Sake Tokuri Box with Calligraphy – Japan Antique Roadshow

$132.36 AUD

🎎 This evocative antique wooden box from Japan, likely dating to the mid-Showa period (昭和時代, 1926–1989) or earlier, was purpose-built to house a pair of sake flasks, known as tokuri (徳利). The hand-brushed calligraphy (書道, shodō) on the lid and interior of the box adds a ceremonial air—suggesting that this box and its contents may once have played a role in a sake tasting event or formal competition.

Measuring approximately 7 cm long, 8.5 cm wide, and 15.5 cm deep, and weighing 220 grams, the box exhibits a warm natural patina, with marks, scratches, and honest wear from age and use. There is a small gap or chip at the edge of the lid, and possibly a filled or stabilized crack along one side—subtle details that only enrich its story. Structurally, the piece remains sturdy and full of character.

This item is ideal as a display piece, a keepsake container, or an inspiration for creative reuse. It embodies the mingei (民芸, folk craft) philosophy: celebrating the beauty of well-used, handmade objects that served real, everyday purposes in Japanese life.

Curated with care in Shizuoka City by Kurt Bell, this piece offers a tangible connection to Japan’s artisanal traditions and a quieter, more thoughtful past.

Embark with Kurt, an American journeyman born in 1964, as he explores Japan’s cultural and spiritual legacy through artifacts both ordinary and extraordinary. With Stoic reflection and insights from his memoir Going Alone, each object becomes a gateway to story, memory, and The Good Life. 🌄📚🎎
