🎎 Japanese Wrought Iron Monkey Hook – Mid-Showa Era – Japan Antique Roadshow

$66.75 CAD

🎎 This hand-forged Japanese iron hook features a stylized monkey design, with upraised arms that curve into functional hooks at both ends. While traditionally called a monkey hook, the figure’s proportions—especially the stubby tail and rounded features—suggest it may in fact represent an ape. Either way, the piece reflects the whimsical character often found in Japanese folk crafts (mingei 民芸), where charm and practicality blend seamlessly.

While difficult to date precisely, the construction techniques, materials, and patina suggest production during the mid-Showa era (昭和, 1926–1989), most likely between the 1950s and 1970s, when hand-forged household items were still made by regional blacksmiths across Japan’s countryside.

The surface shows areas of deep patina and mild surface rust accumulated over decades of use, but the structure remains sound and entirely functional. Hooks like this were commonly used in rural homes, storehouses, or farm sheds to suspend baskets, tools, or supplies from beams or rafters—a practical tool imbued with personality.
