🎎 Japanese Tin Coin Bank — Mid-Showa Era — Japan Antique Roadshow
🎎 This charming old Japanese coin bank likely dates to the mid-Showa era (昭和時代, 1926–1989), a period spanning much of Japan’s modernization following World War II. Made of tinplate metal, this simple but nostalgic savings box features a coin slot at the top and a small hinged locking door on the front. While the original key is missing, the lock remains in its open position, allowing the door to open freely.
The surface retains remnants of its original red lacquered finish, now faded and worn with areas of oxidation, surface rust, and general discoloration that speak to decades of handling and exposure. Despite these marks of age, the structure remains solid and stands level, making it fully functional as a nostalgic display piece or decorative collectible.
In postwar Japan, simple coin banks like this were often used by schoolchildren or at home to encourage saving small coins—a quiet reflection of the era’s frugality and rebuilding spirit.
