🎎 This commanding hand-carved wooden Daruma figure, likely from the 1970s or 1980s, embodies the enduring spirit of Zen resilience. Crafted in solid wood with bold, angular strokes, it portrays Bodhidharma—the semi-legendary Indian monk who brought Chan (Zen) Buddhism to China. The figure’s expressive, scowling face and heavy, rounded form give it a grounded, meditative presence, perfect for a desk, tokonoma alcove, or personal altar.

On the reverse, in white paint, is written “Shimoda Ko” (下田港), referencing the port town of Shimoda at the tip of the Izu Peninsula in Shizuoka Prefecture. This was likely a souvenir from a visit to that coastal city, long known for its historical significance and quiet beauty.
