🎎 This is a beautiful example of traditional Japanese folk craftsmanship (民芸 mingei), an antique mushi kago (虫かご) — insect cage — thoughtfully handmade from slender bamboo rods and fine slats. Likely dating from the mid-Showa era or earlier, it reflects the enduring artistry of Japan’s bamboo craft, where natural materials are transformed into tools of both utility and quiet beauty.

The cage features a sliding door at one end for introducing small insects, as well as a clever bamboo latch mechanism that allows the base to be detached for larger specimens. A simple twisted string loop at the top serves as a handle for carrying or display. Inside, a fine wire perch remains intact — evoking the warm summer evenings when children and collectors admired cicadas or fireflies.
