🎎 This hand-cast Japanese iron trivet was likely crafted for use beneath a tetsubin (鉄瓶) cast iron tea kettle, both to protect delicate surfaces and to elevate the kettle slightly during tea preparation or serving. The cutout design features a five-petal motif reminiscent of traditional Japanese family crests (kamon), though this example does not correspond directly to any specific clan emblem. Instead, it reflects a more generalized floral aesthetic often found in Japanese decorative arts.

Weighing 168 grams and measuring approximately 9 centimeters in diameter, this piece likely dates from the mid-Showa era (昭和時代, 1926–1989), possibly from the 1950s to 1970s. Its surface bears a rich, natural patina of light rust and wear from years of quiet service, but remains fully sound and ready for continued practical or decorative use.

While strongly rooted in Japan’s tea culture, such trivets may also have served in everyday settings for hot pots, kettles, or braziers—simple, functional items elevated by thoughtful craftsmanship and design.
