🎎 Mid-Showa Japanese Lacquered Guinomi – Mt. Fuji & Miho no Matsubara – Japan Antique Roadshow
This striking mid-Showa era guinomi (sake cup) is hand-carved from wood and finished in brilliant red, black, and gold urushi lacquer. Inside, a serene brush-painted landscape shows Mt. Fuji rising over the shoreline of Miho no Matsubara (三保の松原), the famed coastal pine grove in Shizuoka. The trees lean with the wind, and a trail of birds crosses the golden sky, all captured in the minimal, evocative strokes of a seasoned craftsperson.

According to legend, Miho no Matsubara is the site where a celestial maiden (tennyo 天女) descended to bathe in the sea, hanging her feathered robe on a pine branch. Today, the view of Fuji from this coast is counted among Japan’s "Three Views" (日本三景), celebrated for centuries in art and poetry. The landscape painted inside this cup captures that reverence, reduced to its quiet essence.
