🎎 Antique Japanese Brass Whistle – Likely Taisho-Era Instructor or Military Use – Japan Antique Roadshow

£73.41

🎎 This antique Japanese whistle is a finely crafted, well-preserved example of early 20th century functional design. The piece is constructed from brass, formed from three soldered sections, and includes a loop for attachment to a cord or lanyard—likely for wearing around the neck during use. Its specific purpose remains uncertain; it may have served as a school instructor’s whistle, military or police signal device, or gymnasium tool—any of which would be consistent with whistles in Japan during this period.

The whistle produces a pleasant, bright tone with a lightly chortling cadence, typical of high-quality signal whistles designed to carry well over distance. It remains in excellent functional condition despite its clear age. Surface wear includes moderate patina, discoloration, and faint evidence of long-term handling. No major dents or structural flaws are visible, aside from one very subtle corner depression, likely from use or storage.

The dealer who originally sourced this item dated it to the Taisho period (大正時代, 1912–1926), a short but distinct era in Japanese history characterized by both modernization and continuation of earlier Meiji-era craftsmanship. While exact dating is difficult without formal provenance, the materials, construction style, and wear are consistent with whistles from the early 20th century.
