🎎 Hand-Painted Guinomi Sake Cup with Foot Chips – Showa Era – Japan Antique Roadshow

£25.62

🎎 This elegant and expressive Japanese guinomi (ぐい呑み)—a small sake cup—is hand-crafted and hand-painted, showcasing bold cobalt-blue motifs on a speckled ivory glaze. Likely dating from the mid to late Shōwa period (昭和時代, 1926–1989), it reflects Japan’s folk ceramic tradition, blending rustic simplicity with quiet refinement.

The cup measures approximately 8.5 cm across the top, 4 cm at the base, and 4 cm in height, weighing around 90 grams—slightly larger than many sake cups, possibly intended for more generous pours or for serving warm sake (atsukan, 熱燗).

The exterior features a combed wave or key-fret design at the rim with angular, mountain-like motifs around the body. Inside, a simple ringed border surrounds a small, hand-drawn mark at the center—highlighting its handmade nature. The glaze carries natural kan’nyū (貫入, crackle patterning) from age, which contributes to its warm, organic presence. Noticeable discoloration within the glaze is visible, likely from variations during the firing process—a common feature in traditional kiln work that adds to its character.

This particular example shows more significant wear than some: multiple chips are present along the foot, including one larger chip, and there may be a faint hairline crack that is difficult to fully confirm on close inspection. The overall structural integrity remains stable, but these imperfections are clearly visible and should be noted. It remains a highly displayable and collectible piece, rich in wabi-sabi charm and mingei (民芸, folk craft) character.

📏 Approximate dimensions:

Curated in Shizuoka City by Kurt Bell, this well-worn sake cup stands as a quiet and honest reminder of Japan’s living pottery traditions, where imperfection and beauty coexist.
