🎎 Antique Japanese Shop Bell - Echoes from a Mid-Showa Storefront

¥32,275 JPY

🎎 This exceptional antique door bell from Japan dates to the mid-Showa period (1926–1989), though it may very well be older. A rare survivor of a time gone by, this bell was once mounted to the doorframe of a traditional shop or merchant’s home, chiming gently each time the wooden door swung open. The soft yet alerting sound of the bell would have welcomed customers or family members—signaling movement, arrival, and life within.

The bell itself is crafted from a material with the visual weight of iron but the patina and corrosion resistance of aged brass or bronze. The clapper is rusted iron, giving a satisfying ring when moved. Suspended on a gracefully curved metal bracket measuring 19 cm in length, the bell hangs 7 cm tall and 7.2 cm wide at the mouth, and weighs approximately 180 grams.

Still functional and very display-worthy, this piece would make an excellent addition to a genkan (entranceway), cabin, shop, or personal collection of Japanese architectural or folk antiques. The warmth of its aged surface, coupled with its practical charm, makes this bell not just an object but a voice from the past—one that has announced countless arrivals and departures.

Curated with care by Kurt Bell in Shizuoka City, this bell is a singular find in decades of searching, and a piece I’ve personally enjoyed using in my own home—until it finds its next destination.
