This compact wooden box from mid-20th century Japan reflects the humble ethos of mingei—the folkcraft tradition that values practical, everyday objects shaped by hand and use. With a clever pivoting lid affixed by a single brass pin, the box opens and closes with subtle mechanical charm—simple, sturdy, and thoughtful. Its dark finish (not lacquered) speaks to years of work, and the joinery appears to be fastened by either brass nails or traditional bamboo pins, a nod to vernacular Japanese craftsmanship.

The wood may be hinoki (Japanese cypress) or sugi (Japanese cedar), both commonly favored in Japanese carpentry for their fragrance, durability, and ease of shaping. Heavily worn but fully functional, this handmade container may have been crafted by a local daiku (carpenter) or tataku (artisan joiner) to hold tools, needles, or small parts. Faint marks—including a curious “XOXO” on the base—add quiet charm. Whether used as a desk object, keepsake box, or conversation piece, this item rewards close attention.
