🎎 Celadon Fish Chopstick Rest - Japanese Hashi-Oki & Toothpick Holder
🎎 This delightful ceramic hashi-oki (箸置き) from Japan is shaped like a plump little tai (鯛)—the sea bream long associated with celebration and good fortune (medetai, めでたい). A charming combination of practicality and whimsy, this piece doubles as a chopstick rest and toothpick holder. The curved back holds your hashi (箸), while the wide, open mouth makes a perfect little receptacle for a single toothpick.
This piece is just under 30 grams in weight, and measures approximately 6.75 centimeters in length, 4 centimeters in width, and 3 centimeters tall. It’s finished in a beautiful 青磁 (seiji) celadon glaze, with hand-finished detailing on the fins and scales. The black eye spot is a splash of intentional iron glaze (鉄釉, tetsuyu), adding character to its simple, folk-art feel.
Dating most likely from the mid-to-late Showa period (1950s–1970s), this is a wonderful example of mingei (民芸)—Japanese folk craft—where utility and beauty blend effortlessly. These novelty fish-style rests were popular gifts, and were often brought out during festive meals and holidays.

Curated with care in Shizuoka City, this playful item offers more than charm—it’s a quiet link to the rhythms and rituals of traditional Japanese life. Picture it on a table beside lacquered bowls, ceramic tokkuri, and the warmth of conversation.
