🎎 Antique Japanese Lacquer Plate with Koma Design – Japan Antique Roadshow
🎎 Antique Japanese Lacquer Plate with Koma Design – Japan Antique Roadshow
This is a deeply worn antique Japanese wooden plate, finished in dark lacquer and decorated with a simple, hand-painted depiction of a traditional spinning top (koma) with its trailing string. The design, executed in red, ochre, and tan, reflects the playful imagery of childhood toys once cherished throughout Japan.
The plate exhibits extensive signs of age and handling. Surface scratches cover the lacquer, and significant staining is present throughout, adding to its character but making clear that this is a well-used piece. The wear lends a pronounced wabi-sabi presence—expressive of impermanence and the quiet beauty of long use. Likely from the mid-Showa period (circa 1950s–1970s), though it may date earlier.
📏 Approximate dimensions:
• Diameter: 14.2 cm
• Depth: 1.2 cm
• Weight: 60 grams
• Materials: Wood with lacquer and hand-painted decoration
• Condition: Heavy wear with extensive scratching and prominent stains; structurally sound
Curated in Shizuoka City by Kurt Bell, this heavily worn but visually engaging plate offers a quiet, authentic glimpse into Japan’s folk traditions and the humble beauty of everyday objects.
