This mid-Showa era teacup (c. 1950s–1970s) captures the quiet elegance of everyday Japanese craft. Wheel-thrown and finished in a translucent beige glaze, the cup features a hand-painted dragonfly (tonbo, 蜻蛉) encircled by a single expressive brushstroke at the bottom of the bowl. Visible crazing in the glaze adds a textured warmth, inviting touch and reflection.

In Japan, the dragonfly is more than a summer insect—it’s a classical symbol of strength, speed, and perseverance. Appearing in Heian-era poetry, samurai crests, and rural folklore, it represents forward motion and a focused mind. When placed at the bottom of a teacup, the image appears gradually as the tea is sipped, merging visual delight with the meditative rhythm of drinking—one of many subtle gestures in Japanese tea culture. The surrounding circle may suggest an ensō (円相), a Zen symbol of completeness and the beauty of imperfection.

The cup bears a faint maker’s stamp impressed near the foot, suggesting it was made by a small kiln rather than mass-produced. Its subtle design and everyday wear imply it was meant for personal use—not a souvenir, but a vessel for actual living.
