🎎 Japan Antique Roadshow: Morimoto Silk Thread Spool – Mid-Showa Textile Tool

$58.72 NZD

🎎 This beautifully worn wooden spool, or 糸巻き (itomaki), hails from the mid-Showa 昭和 period (circa 1950s–1970s), though it may be older. Originally used in Japan’s thriving textile industry—likely for holding silk thread—this piece reflects the refined utility and elegant design sensibilities of a bygone era.

Stamped on one end in fading purple ink is the company name 森本絹糸株式会社 (Morimoto Kinshi Kabushiki Gaisha, or Morimoto Silk Thread Co., Ltd.), along with a triple-circle crest—presumably a company logo. This provides direct evidence of its origin and ties the object to Japan’s legacy silk manufacturing sector.

Measuring approximately 9.5 cm in length and just under 6 cm in diameter at each end, and weighing about 50 grams, the spool is solidly made and aged to a warm natural patina. It stands well on either end, making it a wonderful object for display—ideal for rustic interiors, vintage-themed projects, or as part of a mingei 民芸 folk art collection.

Collected in Shizuoka Prefecture and offered here on the Japan Antique Roadshow, this object preserves the spirit of Japanese everyday craftsmanship. A small, elegant trace of a larger, industrious past.

Embark with Kurt, an American journeyman born in 1964, as he explores the enduring material culture of Japan—capturing its history through the lens of a Stoic life lived with curiosity and respect. Each piece tells a story, and this quiet tool has much to say.
