🎎 Japanese Brass Kiseru Tobacco Pipe – Early to Mid-Showa Era – Japan Antique Roadshow

$78.00

🎎 This is an original Japanese kiseru (煙管)—a traditional tobacco pipe—crafted entirely from solid brass. With its clean proportions and machine-tooled precision, this example likely dates from the early to mid-Shōwa period (昭和時代, 1926–1989), a time when such pipes were transitioning from handmade artisan pieces to more standardized forms. The pipe bowl and mouthpiece are visually striking, with the bowl bearing a hexagonal shape reminiscent of a brass nut—suggesting industrial influence, or perhaps repurposed fittings shaped into a functional aesthetic.

The pipe measures approximately 16.5 cm (6.5 inches) long and 1 cm wide at its thickest point, with the bowl standing about 1 cm tall. It weighs 80 grams. While well-worn from age and use, the piece remains structurally sound and complete. The brass has developed a soft, even patina. Though the bowl is darkened from past use, this kiseru could be carefully cleaned for reuse or appreciated as a display piece—a dignified representative of Japan’s smoking culture.

Once used to smoke finely shredded kizami tobacco, the kiseru was more than a utilitarian item. It served as a symbol of refinement and quiet contemplation, especially during the Edo and Meiji periods, and continued to hold cultural significance well into the 20th century.

Curated in Shizuoka City by Kurt Bell, this piece offers a quiet, tangible connection to Japan’s ritual objects and the aesthetics of pause.

Embark with Kurt, an American journeyman born in 1964, as he explores Japan’s cultural and spiritual legacy through artifacts both ordinary and extraordinary. With Stoic reflection and insights from his memoir Going Alone, each object becomes a gateway to story, memory, and The Good Life. 🌄📚🎎
