This beautifully preserved Japanese owan bowl likely dates from the early Shōwa or Taishō period. Made of carefully seasoned wood and finished in vibrant red lacquer, the bowl features a delicate floral design—likely stylized hibiscus or daisy-like blossoms—painted in gold and soft hues. The motif is traditional yet playful, blending botanical form with artistic interpretation. The bowl remains in excellent, unused condition and still retains its original protective paper around the base. A small lacquer drop near the lid hints at its handmade origins—otherwise, the piece is pristine and ready for use or display.

This work of Mingei (folk craft) tradition reflects the collaborative process of Japanese lacquerware creation, typically involving three specialists: a wood shaper, a base lacquerer, and a decorative artist. The wood would have been slowly dried and shaped over several years to prevent cracking before being lacquered in multiple layers—a process requiring both skill and patience. Bowls like this were often given in matching sets as wedding gifts to mark auspicious beginnings, embodying both function and artistry in daily life.
