🎎 Antique Japanese garden shears - Japan Antique Roadshow Description:

$48.00

🎎 These antique Japanese garden shears, known as 植木鋏 (uekibasami), are a beautifully aged example of mid-to-late Showa-era toolmaking—likely crafted between the 1970s and early 2000s. Forged of high-quality steel and measuring 17 cm in length by 9.5 cm in width, with a weight of 180 grams, these shears were built for precision hand-pruning in bonsai and ornamental gardening.

The engraved mark 菊屋製 (Kikuya-sei), meaning "Made by Kikuya", suggests they originated from a blacksmith workshop with deep roots in Japan’s proud tradition of toolmaking. The condition is worn but very serviceable: the cutting edge remains sharp, while the handle and frame exhibit rust, surface pitting, and rich patina—visible signs of honest use and decades of gardening life.

Such tools were commonly used by professional gardeners and bonsai artists across Japan, prized not just for functionality, but also for their tactile beauty and meditative rhythm of use. A fine collectible or functional heirloom tool for your garden, curated and offered by Kurt Bell in Shizuoka.
