Shinto Shimenawa Rope Japan Kamidana Shogatsu New Year

Description

Brand new small Japanese Shinto prayer rope, called shimenawa. These are commonly seen at Shinto shrines, hanging from the torii gate or above the altar entrance. Made from twisted and braided rice straw, shimenawa are traditionally replaced at the start of each year (shogatsu) and often decorated with paper inserts. To secure the paper, use a tool or twist the rope slightly to slide the paper into place. Historically, farmers made shimenawa from leftover rice straw. The included video shows a local farmer crafting his own shimenawa for the new year.

This small shimenawa is suitable for use with kamidana altars, above doorways, or torii gates or anywhere one might wish to impart a sense of spiritual reverence.  The shimenawa includes four cut paper inserts.
