More about the game of Go

When I was ten, my father brought home a new board game: Go. The board was wooden, marked with intersecting lines forming small squares, and the game pieces were small black and white stones, stored in wooden bowls. Within an hour after dinner, my father and I were playing our first game together. Years later, on my first visit to Japan, I was delighted to see old men playing Go in public parks. After moving to Japan, I noticed Go halls in the community, columns in newspapers, and even professional matches on TV. What had once seemed a novel pastime was, in Japan, a serious pursuit—much like in China, Korea, and around the world.

Go originated in China about 4,000 years ago and spread to Korea and Japan in the 5th century, brought by Buddhist priests. The rules remain largely unchanged since ancient times: easy to learn in less than an hour, but difficult to master over a lifetime. The objective is simple—claim as much board space as possible before the game ends by mutual consent. Players place stones at line intersections to create boundaries, but opponents can block, muscle in, or capture stones through strategy. This tactical battle of wits has earned the game the nickname "hand conversation." In Japan, it's common for young Go prodigies to live with masters as they train for their debut on the professional circuit.
