Japanese Ceramic Sake Cup with Okame Face
Description
Ceramic sake cup featuring a hand-painted image of Okame, a beloved character in Japanese theatre and myth. Also known as Uzume or Otafuku, Okame is the goddess of mirth, often depicted in Japanese art with her full cheeks and joyful eyes. Historically, she may have represented idealized feminine beauty. Today, her image still charms, despite sometimes being used humorously. A famous Kyogen actor remarked that Okame's face is what every man hopes to see on his wedding night. The cup bears the Japanese phrase "man puku," meaning "ten thousand well wishes," and was acquired in Shizuoka, Japan, near Mt. Fuji.
* Okame's male companion is "Usobuki.
