Remember how you felt after watching "Jaws" for the first time? If you lived near the ocean, you probably hesitated to swim far from shore. That fear is similar to what pre-modern Japanese felt around rivers, lakes, or streams. But their fear wasn’t of a great white shark—it was of a small water creature called the Kappa. These impish beings, about the size of a child, lived in groups in deep, quiet waters. Despite their small size, Kappas were strong enough to drag animals like horses and even unsuspecting people into the water.

About the Listed Item

This interesting hand-crafted ceramic display shows a single Kappa figure poling along a waterway on a small raft.  The "pole" is actually a length of narrow bamboo which fits nicely in the hands of the Kappa figure.  There is a small basket upon the raft which we suspect may be filled with cucumbers, as these are traditionally thought to be the favorite food of all Kappa.  This brand new hand-made ceramic piece was acquired in the historic city of Shizuoka, Japan near the foot of Mt. Fuji.
