🎎 Vintage Ceramic Daruma Bell – Zen Folk Art from Showa Japan – Japan Antique Roadshow

$44.00

🎎 This striking vintage Daruma 達磨 bell is a powerful and expressive example of Japanese mingei 民芸 (folk craft) tradition. Shaped in the image of Bodhidharma, the legendary 6th-century Indian monk who founded Zen Buddhism 禅, this ceramic bell captures the stern gaze and determined expression traditionally associated with Daruma—his scowling face tilted upward and to the left, a visual cue symbolizing inner strength and spiritual focus.

This piece likely dates from the mid to late Showa 昭和 period (1926–1989)—a transformative era in Japanese history that saw the preservation of traditional crafts even amidst rapid modernization. The bell is made from ceramic or fired clay, hand-finished in a deep red glaze with black shading and white scuffing from age and handling. The wear across the surface—visible chips, scratches, and exposed ceramic—forms a beautiful wabi-sabi 侘寂 patina, speaking to the bell's age and long life of appreciation.

The bell measures approximately 4.5 cm tall by 5 cm wide and weighs about 50 grams. It includes a braided purple cord for hanging or display. When shaken, the bell produces a soft rattling tone—more meditative than musical, a quiet echo of its Zen roots.

Daruma figures are cherished in Japan not only for their religious significance, but also as everyday symbols of resilience. The popular saying “Nanakorobi yaoki 七転び八起き”—"fall seven times, get up eight"—is often associated with Daruma, reflecting the monk’s unyielding spiritual perseverance. This particular bell would make a unique display item, meditation space accent, or gift for anyone drawn to traditional Japanese culture and mindful living.
