Japanese Box Hibachi Brazier - Miniature Plastic Model

Description

This small (please see size information below) brand new plastic hibachi model recreates the look of the classic Japanese box naga-hibachi which was, for centuries, a common and very functional part of the traditional Japanese home.  Ceramic and porcelain binkake are another type of hibachi which became popular in Japan during the Meiji period (1868-1912).  Binkake-style hibachi resemble large garden pots and often feature beautiful hand-painted designs covering the vessel's outer surface.  Unlike in the west where the hibachi is normally viewed as a type of barbeque grill, the Japanese hibachi did traditionally function more as a space heater (though it was indeed sometimes used for heating water or light cooking).  The last photo below shows Emily's great grandfather with a friend warming their hands over a small wooden hibachi.
